Practice Highlights: Since 2002, served as a vital resource for the medically underserved in northeastern Nebraska. Together with their co-located partner, East Central District Health Department, GNCHC operates two federally qualified health centers (FQHC), located in the small cities of Columbus and Fremont.  While the primary service area of the two clinics encompasses seven counties, in 2021, the two clinics saw a total of 10,399 patients from over 45 zip codes.  The current position is for the Columbus location.

In 2014, GNCHC constructed a new building, and began seeing patients there in 2015.  The 29,400 square foot, $6.7 million project doubled the size of the previous facility and allowed staff and programs, which had been housed in three different Columbus locations, to be together in one building.  The majority of the new building is devoted to patient space.  The clinical section of the shared facility has five provider bays, each with three exam rooms, an office, and a computer station.  The dental clinic has seven operatories, and four behavioral health offices.  The reception desk in the front entrance of the building has five medical office specialists, and there is a large patient waiting area as in the interior area of the building near the clinical space.  In Fall, 2020, GNCHC remodeled a large, former storage “shelled” space, which is now a same-day clinic with two exam rooms and a reception desk.   A newly remodeled lab, an x-ray room, and an on-site, contract pharmacy, Genoa Healthcare Pharmacy, round out the clinic facilities.

The GNCHC clinic is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Extended hours are Wednesdays, when the clinic is open until 7 p.m.  Support is one-on-one, and the clinics will be converting to NextGen in 2022.  Many staff members are bilingual in Spanish/English, and a language interpreting system is used for patient/provider translation.  Other support services include transportation to and from appointments using two new, handicapped accessible vans; an Outreach and Enrollment department that assists area residents who want to/are eligible to enroll in the healthcare marketplace, Medicaid, Medicare, and other programs for which they may qualify.  Telehealth services are also available for patients.  This is an area that has expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As noted earlier, one unique feature of the GNCHC clinic in Columbus is that it is co-located with a state-approved district health department.  East Central District Health Department, (ECDHD) serves four surrounding counties with programs including tobacco cessation; Women, Infants and Children (WIC); Early Development Network (EDN), a state program assisting families with children, ages 0-3, who have developmental disabilities; Vaccines for Children; mold and radon abatement; a Public Health Emergency Preparedness program and; the four-county area’s infectious disease monitoring program.  The co-location of these agencies offers increased opportunities to collaborate in providing needed services to area residents.

GNCHC has experienced growth in patient numbers in almost all of the last five years.  GNCHC experienced an 11% growth in patients between 2018 and 2019 (a slight decrease in patient numbers in 2020-2021 can be assumed to be an anomaly, just one effect of the COVID-19 pandemic), and there is potential for growth within the service area.  GNCHC is providing care to more than half (53%) of the uninsured patients in its seven-county service area, and is reaching 31% of low-income patients, and 12% of Medicaid patients, leaving over 40,000 people as potential patients of GNCHC.  While it would not be realistic to suggest that 100% of those patients would choose GNCHC, there is clearly continued opportunity for growth.
